A super match between Belenenses and F.C. Porto, counting for the Portugal Cup quarterfinal, amazed the fans. Belenenses, currently on the bottom of the Liga Sagres table, was ahead two times in the normal time, but Porto managed to equalize every time.
Because after the extra time the score was still 2-2, the penalty shootout began. Both teams missed numerous kicks, so the game was finally over after 30 kicks. A total of 19 goals scored and 11 missed kicks contributed to the final score: Belenenses – F.C. Porto 11-12.
The match’s hero was Beto, the F.C. Porto’s goalkeeper, which managed to save 5 kicks. Thanks to his contribution, F.C. Porto, currently the Cup holder, moved up to the Cup’s quarterfinals.
This is not the biggest number of penalties recorded on an official game. The shootout record was set on 31 August 2005, at the match between Tunbridge Wells and Littlehampton Town, 40 kicks being taken.
