The North Atlantic Treaty signed on 4 April 1949 created the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) also called the Atlantic Alliance. Currently, the Alliance consists in 28 member states. At first the main purpose of this alliance was strictly political, but after the Korean War, in 1950s, the Atlantic Alliance was organized also as a military structure ready to protect any member state from an external military attack. There is no universal definition for terrorism but most consider it to be violent acts against civilians committed by nongovernmental agencies in order to create constant fear and terror, for political, religious or ideological purpose.
The first actions ever recorded as a type of terrorism go back to the 1795 France, during the Reign of Terror. The French government systematically used terror as a policy to intimidate the population. Since then the terrorism spread all over the world, today being a part of everyday life. (more…)
The stories of Russian and American spies during the Cold War were good novel and movie scenarios for a long period of time. In the past ten years no one paid attention to these stories any more, because nobody believed that these powerful countries continued their spying activities. At the beginning of the December, Russia confirmed that has a deal to sell surface-to-air missiles to Iran. Although Russian officials insist that the missiles are for defense only, United Sates and Israel criticized the deal. Thanks to the missiles the new anti-aircraft Iranian system will be capable to shoot down American or Israeli fighter jets in case of an air strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Earlier this year Russia faced international criticism when agreed to sell missile systems to Syria. (more…)
